Reading a Chemical Label

Captions available

The idea

Hazardous chemical labels follow a standard set of elements: a pictogram, a signal word, hazard statements and precautionary statements.

In practice

There are eight standard pictograms; the signal word "danger" marks the more severe hazards, and "warning" the less severe.

Where people slip

Never use a chemical from an unlabeled container.
