Responding to a Fire

Captions available

The idea

Many facilities teach fire response with the letters R, A, C and E, taken in order.

In practice

R is rescue, which some facilities call remove: get anyone in immediate danger away from the fire or smoke. A is alarm: shout "fire," pull the nearest alarm station and call for help. C is confine: close doors as you leave to slow the fire's spread and give responders time. E is extinguish or evacuate: a trained person may fight a small fire with an extinguisher once the other steps are done, and otherwise everyone evacuates by the building's plan.

Where people slip

Fight a fire only if you are trained and the fire is small. If you are unsure, or one extinguisher would not be enough, evacuate.
