Role Guides: Manager and AI Engineer

The idea

The Toolbox's last two role guides are for project and product managers, and for AI engineers and data scientists.

In practice

Step one: the manager, whose strength is moving many people in roughly the same direction, uses Packs in steering reviews to align business and technical teams. Step two: the manager frames scope and risk by things, as in this release touches three Gold things, and adds the method's lines to the definition of done. Step three: the AI engineer, whose strength is building tools that can go very wrong if not anchored, treats Packs as the ground truth for features and labels. Step four: the AI engineer designs prompts around things, supplies the Pack before asking a model to generate or classify, and uses matrices to see which policies and tests a model might disturb.

Where people slip

The AI engineer's guide carries the book's sharpest warning about AI: a model built on free-floating signals with no anchor in a thing is hard to explain, hard to audit and hard to change safely.
