The idea
Classical conditioning is learning by association: a neutral stimulus paired with a meaningful one comes to trigger the same response on its own.
In practice
Ivan Pavlov's dogs salivating at a sound that had come to signal their food.
Where people slip
The food is the unconditioned stimulus; the once-neutral sound becomes the conditioned stimulus. Vocabulary can be learned this way.
