Theories of Intelligence

The idea

Unit seven taught three answers to whether intelligence is one thing or many. Cattell divided general ability into fluid intelligence, logic and novel problem-solving, and crystallized intelligence, accumulated knowledge, entry 0930. Gardner proposed eight intelligences, linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal and naturalistic, entry 0931. Sternberg's triarchic theory proposed analytical, creative and practical intelligence, entry 0935, and practical intelligence grows with experience, entry 1827.

In practice

One student solving an unfamiliar logic puzzle, one composing music, and one running the family shop shrewdly: fluid, musical and practical intelligence.

Where people slip

Gardner's theory is contested, entry 0932 records: critics call the intelligences talents and note overlap. Standard tests measure mainly analytical intelligence, entry 0935. Exam items describe a task and ask which ability or theory it fits.
