Measuring Intelligence
The idea
Intelligence testing grew from ratio IQ, mental age divided by chronological age, times one hundred, to modern deviation IQ, a score's distance from one's age-group norm, entry 0937. Tests are normed to a mean of one hundred and a standard deviation of fifteen, so about sixty-eight percent of people score between eighty-five and one hundred fifteen, entry 0938. Scores rose about three points per decade in the Flynn effect, entry 0939. Tests serve screening, prediction and diagnosis, entry 0940.
In practice
Two children scoring seventy and one hundred thirty, each two standard deviations from the mean, entry 0938's example.
Where people slip
The misconception is that modern IQ is still mental age over real age, entry 0937. A score is one piece of the picture, entry 0938 warns, and a good test needs reliability and validity.
