The idea
Amniocentesis samples amniotic fluid around week sixteen; chorionic villus sampling takes placental tissue in the first trimester. Both detect chromosomal and some genetic disorders.
In practice
A sample of fluid or placental tissue analysed for the fetus's chromosomes.
