Implementing an Evidence-Based Change
The idea
The technique: assess readiness and infrastructure before choosing anything; select both an organizational model and a process model; build mentor capacity and the structures to support it at the same time; choose named strategies rather than inventing them; and plan sustainment in the same sequence as the rollout.
In practice
An appraised practice taken to an organization. Readiness assessed and infrastructure gaps named before a date is set. An organizational model chosen for the system and a process model for the team. Mentors developed while protected time and evidence access are put in place, so competence arrives to something ready for it. Strategies selected from a defined list, in combination, matched to the practice, the clinicians and the process. Early adopters engaged first; resistant staff asked directly what concerns them. Recognition, dissemination in both directions, an accountable owner, and a reassessment date all fixed before the change goes live.
Where people slip
Plan the sustaining before the launching. An implementation that reaches its go-live with no owner, no measure and no reassessment date has scheduled its own decay.
