Captions available
The idea
Modernism, the anchor says, was shaped by Marx, Nietzsche, Freud and Frazer, who questioned the certainties of religion, morality and the self, and by the First World War. Modernists broke narrative continuity, used stream of consciousness and, in Pound's phrase, wanted to "make it new."
In practice
Freud, the war, make it new.
Where people slip
Modernism defined itself against the Victorians.
