Heart of Darkness: Marlow and the Frame
Captions available
The idea
Heart of Darkness is a frame narrative: an unnamed narrator on a boat on the Thames hears Marlow tell his story, which begins, "And this also has been one of the dark places of the earth." The anchor notes it seems a Victorian plot of civilization against savagery but undermines it.
In practice
A narrator hearing a narrator.
Where people slip
London too is a dark place.
