The War Poets

Captions available

The idea

The First World War, with its trenches, gas and mass slaughter at the Somme and Ypres, produced the war poets. Early poems like Rupert Brooke's were idealistic; later poets such as Owen, Sassoon and Rosenberg described the horrors and attacked the patriotic lie.

In practice

From idealism to horror.

Where people slip

The war changed poetry's tone.
