The idea
Joseph Conrad, born Józef Korzeniowski in Russian-ruled Ukraine to Polish parents, served at sea and learned English only in his twenties. He became a British novelist of moral crisis, in Lord Jim and other works, and in eighteen ninety commanded a steamer in the Belgian Congo.
