Captions available

The idea

Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton, of eighteen forty-eight, a tale of Manchester life, deals with working-class hardship. North and South, serialized by Dickens and published in eighteen fifty-five, sets Margaret Hale from the south against the northern mill town of Milton. She also wrote a Life of Charlotte Brontë.

In practice

Manchester, mills, workers.

Where people slip

Gaskell is a condition-of-England novelist.
