The idea
The sensation novel of the eighteen sixties, with secrets, crimes and doubles, began with Wilkie Collins's The Woman in White, of eighteen sixty, East Lynne and Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret. Collins's The Moonstone, of eighteen sixty-eight, told by several narrators, is an early detective novel.
