The idea
Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman, of eighteen ninety-one, first serialized in censored form, follows a poor woman seduced by Alec d'Urberville. Jude the Obscure, of eighteen ninety-five, on class, education, religion and marriage, was Hardy's last novel before he turned to poetry.
In practice
A wronged woman; a thwarted scholar.
Where people slip
The subtitle "A Pure Woman" is provocative.
