Victoria's Britain: Industry, Empire, Reform
Captions available
The idea
Victorian Britain saw railways, factories, slums and an empire ruling about a quarter of the world. The Reform Bill of eighteen thirty-two began extending the vote; factory and mine acts eased child labour. The anchor notes a self-image of "the white man's burden" that overlooked exploitation and racism.
In practice
Railways, slums, empire, reform.
Where people slip
Progress and misery coexisted.
