Captions available
The idea
Carlyle's Chartism, of eighteen thirty-nine, first posed the condition-of-England question: whether the working people's state was intolerably wrong. Condition-of-England novelists, including Disraeli, Gaskell, Dickens and Kingsley, tried to move readers; Hard Times owes its subtitle to Carlyle.
