The Lake Poets
Captions available
The idea
The Lake Poets were Wordsworth, Coleridge and Robert Southey, who lived in the Lake District. The Edinburgh Review named them only to disparage them, and the term began as an insult, "the School of whining and hypochondriacal poets that haunt the Lakes."
In practice
Three poets, one region, a hostile label.
Where people slip
The Lake School history rests on one source.
