Captions available

The idea

Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, published between eighteen twelve and eighteen eighteen in Spenserian stanzas, follows a world-weary young man travelling through Europe. Its first two cantos made Byron a celebrity overnight; he wrote, "I awoke one morning and found myself famous."

In practice

A weary wanderer; overnight fame.

Where people slip

Harold is the first Byronic hero.
