Matching First-Generation Romantic Works
The idea
Sort the first Romantics by author and form. Blake wrote Songs of Innocence and of Experience, with "The Lamb," "The Tyger," the two "Chimney Sweeper" poems and "London," and The Marriage of Heaven and Hell. Wordsworth wrote "Tintern Abbey," the Lucy poems, "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud," the sonnets on Westminster Bridge and "The World Is Too Much With Us," the Intimations Ode and The Prelude, and the Preface to Lyrical Ballads. Coleridge wrote The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, "Kubla Khan," "Frost at Midnight," Christabel and the Biographia Literaria. Burns wrote "To a Mouse" in Scots; Charlotte Smith Elegiac Sonnets; Wollstonecraft A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Then use clues: contraries and a child's voice suggest Blake; memory and blank verse Wordsworth; the supernatural and a listener held captive Coleridge; a definition of imagination or fancy the Biographia.
In practice
Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, and the rest.
Where people slip
The Preface is Wordsworth's and the Biographia Coleridge's. Do not swap the two critics.
