Choosing a Cooperative Structure
The idea
Several cooperative structures suit different goals. Think-pair-share has students think alone, discuss with a partner, then share with the class, which suits quick checks of understanding. Jigsaw makes each student an expert on one part who teaches it to the group. Student Teams-Achievement Divisions reward teams for each member's improvement on individual quizzes. Project-based learning organizes extended group work around a real problem or product.
In practice
Worked example: a class must learn four causes of a war in one period. Jigsaw fits: each student masters one cause and teaches it, so every student needs every other.
Where people slip
Match the structure to the goal and to the accountability it builds. Think-pair-share takes minutes; project work takes weeks. The team reward for individual improvement in Student Teams-Achievement Divisions is what guards it against freeloading.
