Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation
Captions available
The idea
Intrinsic motivation comes from the satisfaction an activity itself brings; extrinsic motivation comes from getting something from others, such as grades, praise or prizes.
In practice
A student who reads history because the stories fascinate her is intrinsically motivated; one who reads it for the grade is extrinsically motivated.
Where people slip
Most motivation mixes both, and the mix can shift over time.
