Innate and Cognitive Theories
Captions available
The idea
Theories of motivation fall into two broad groups: innate theories, including instinct, drive, arousal, behavioral and Maslow's, and cognitive theories, including interest, attribution, expectancy-value and self-efficacy.
In practice
Hunger driving a student to the cafeteria fits an innate theory; a student's belief that effort pays off fits a cognitive one.
Where people slip
Self-determination theory bridges the groups, combining needs with cognition.
