The Overjustification Effect
Captions available
The idea
The overjustification effect is the finding that an expected extrinsic reward for an activity a person already enjoys can reduce intrinsic motivation for it.
In practice
A child who loved drawing is paid for each picture, then draws less once the payments stop.
Where people slip
The reward does not add to the enjoyment; it can replace it as the reason for acting.
