Educational Psychology / Unit 13   EDP 1232 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Operant Conditioning and the Four Quadrants

Captions available

The idea

In operant conditioning, behavior is shaped by its consequences; positive means adding and negative means removing, so reinforcement, which increases behavior, and punishment, which decreases it, each come in positive and negative forms.

In practice

Praise, a stopped seat-belt chime, a reprimand and a toy taken away.

Where people slip

Negative reinforcement is not punishment.
