Extinction and Intermittent Reinforcement

Captions available

The idea

Extinction is the fading of a behavior once it is no longer reinforced; intermittent reinforcement makes a behavior slower to learn but also slower to extinguish.

In practice

Clowning that is only sometimes rewarded with laughter is hard to extinguish.

Where people slip

Removing one source of reinforcement may not be enough when classmates supply another.
