The idea
Shaping reinforces successive approximations of a target behavior; prompts, verbal, gestural and physical, help the right response occur; and both prompts and artificial reinforcers are faded until natural reinforcers maintain the behavior.
In practice
A student who once practiced piano for points now practices because playing well is satisfying.
Where people slip
Fading too slowly breeds prompt dependency; too fast brings frustration.
