College Composition / Unit 27   CMP 0661 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds

An Article in Chicago

Captions available

The idea

A Chicago journal-article citation adds the article title in quotation marks and the journal's volume, issue and year.

In practice

Learn the forms in order. First, the full note: the author's first and last name, a comma, the article title in quotation marks with a comma inside, the journal title in italics, the volume number, a comma and n o with the issue number, the year in parentheses, a colon, and the page cited. Second, the shortened note: the author's last name, a short form of the article title in quotation marks, and the page. Third, the bibliography entry: the author's name inverted, the article title in quotation marks, the journal in italics, the volume, issue and year, a colon, and the full page range of the article.

Where people slip

The note cites only the pages you quoted or summarized, while the bibliography gives the article's full page range. Mixing these up is a frequent error.
