College Composition / Unit 27 CMP 0659 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Note Versus Bibliography Entry
The idea
A Chicago note and the bibliography entry for the same source contain similar information arranged in different ways.
In practice
Compare them in order. First, the author's name: the note gives it in normal order, first name first; the bibliography inverts it, last name first, for alphabetizing. Second, punctuation: the note separates its parts with commas; the bibliography separates them with periods. Third, publication facts: the note puts the publisher and year in parentheses; the bibliography sets them off with periods, without parentheses. Fourth, pages: the note gives the specific page cited; the bibliography gives no page for a book, and the full page range for an article. Fifth, numbering: notes are numbered; bibliography entries are not, and they use a hanging indent.
Where people slip
Copying a note into the bibliography unchanged is the commonest Chicago error. Each element must be rearranged and repunctuated for its position.
