College Composition / Unit 27 CMP 0660 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
A Book in Chicago
The idea
A Chicago book citation has three forms: a full first note, a shortened note, and a bibliography entry.
In practice
Learn the three in order. First, the full note: the author's first and last name, a comma, the title in italics, then the publisher and year inside parentheses, a comma, and the page cited. Second, the shortened note: the author's last name, a comma, a short form of the title in italics, a comma, and the page. Third, the bibliography entry: the author's last name, a comma, first name, a period; the title in italics and a period; the publisher, a comma, the year and a period. For books published after nineteen hundred, the current edition no longer requires the place of publication.
Where people slip
Two authors are joined by and in both forms; in the bibliography only the first author's name is inverted. Check the current manual for how many authors to list when there are many.
