The idea
For two authors, give both names every time; for three or more, give the first author's name followed by et al.

In parentheses, two authors are joined by an ampersand; in a narrative citation, they are joined by the word and.
Where people slip
Mixing the ampersand and and, or using et al. for two authors, are common APA errors.
