The idea

Many common phrases add words without adding meaning and can be replaced by a single word.

In practice

"Due to the fact that" becomes because, "at this point in time" becomes now, and "for the purpose of" becomes for.

Where people slip

Phrases such as "for all intents and purposes" and "in a manner of speaking" can usually be deleted outright.
