College Composition / Unit 11 CMP 0252 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Concrete Nouns as Subjects
Captions available
The idea
General nouns name broad categories, such as dog or city; concrete nouns name particular things, such as collie or Chicago.
In practice
"People were outside the library" gives readers little; "Skateboarders weaved past students on the library steps" gives them a scene.
Where people slip
Concrete detail serves readers only when it serves the purpose; do not add detail for decoration.
