College Composition / Unit 8   CMP 0191 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Hyphens

Captions available

The idea

Hyphenate two or more words that work together to describe a noun that follows them.

In practice

"A two-dollar haircut" and "a well-known author" are hyphenated before the noun; "the author is well known" needs no hyphen after it.

Where people slip

A missing hyphen can change meaning, as in a small-business owner versus a small business owner.
