The idea
The principal nth root of a number is the number that, raised to the nth power, equals it — taken nonnegative whenever the index n is even.
In practice
∛8 = 2 and ∛(−27) = −3; but ⁴√16 = 2 only, because the even index keeps the nonnegative choice.
