Vertical Stretches and Compressions

State

A constant multiple on the output stretches the graph vertically when the constant exceeds 1 and compresses it when the constant sits between 0 and 1.

From x² to 2x², the point (1, 1) climbs to (1, 2): every output doubled, the parabola narrowed.

Watch for

Outputs of zero stay zero under any stretch.
