The idea
An equation with the variable on both sides of a product is solved by factoring, never by dividing the variable away; every factor holds a solution.
In practice
x² = 5x moves to x² − 5x = 0 and factors: x(x − 5) = 0, so x = 0 or x = 5. Both check.
