Multiplying Rational Expressions

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

Rational expressions multiply straight across — numerator times numerator over denominator times denominator — with factoring and canceling first to keep results small.

Show

(2/x) · (x²/4): the x and the 2 cancel across, leaving x/2. At x = 2, both sides equal 1. Factor before multiplying and the canceling does the work.
