The idea
A binary acid, hydrogen dissolved in water with one other nonmetal, is named hydro- plus the nonmetal's root plus -ic acid.
In practice
Hydrogen chloride gas, HCl, dissolved in water is named hydrochloric acid, following the hydro- plus -ic acid pattern exactly.
Where people slip
"Hydro-" applies only to the acid in water — the same gas HCl by itself stays named hydrogen chloride.
