Alkynes: Linear Triple Bonds

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

An alkyne contains a carbon-carbon triple bond, each sp-hybridized carbon linear, giving that portion a rigid 180° bond angle.

Show

Ethyne (acetylene) is fully linear because both its carbons are sp hybridized.

Watch for

A triple bond's extra pi bond makes it more reactive, not more stable — alkynes react even more readily than alkenes in addition.
