The FtsZ Ring

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

The FtsZ ring is a ring of repeating FtsZ protein units forming at a bacterium's midpoint, directing formation of a septum, the wall separating daughter nucleoids.

Show

Once the replicated chromosomes clear the midpoint, the FtsZ ring recruits wall material to build the septum inward.

Watch for

The septum grows inward from the edge toward the center — opposite a plant cell's cell plate.
