The idea
A competitive inhibitor resembles an enzyme's substrate closely enough to bind its active site, blocking the true substrate from binding there instead.
In practice
Malonate competitively inhibits succinate dehydrogenase by occupying the same active site succinate would normally bind.
Where people slip
A competitive inhibitor's effect weakens as substrate concentration rises, since substrate and inhibitor are competing for the same site.
