The idea
An integral protein spans or embeds within the phospholipid bilayer; a peripheral protein attaches to the membrane's surface without entering the bilayer.
In practice
Some integral proteins cross the membrane once; others fold back and forth through it as many as a dozen times.
Where people slip
Location — embedded versus surface-attached — distinguishes integral from peripheral, not function.
