The idea
The anterior pituitary is glandular tissue that synthesizes and secretes its own hormones under hypothalamic control; the posterior pituitary stores and releases hormones the hypothalamus itself produces.
In practice
Oxytocin is made in the hypothalamus but released into circulation from the posterior pituitary.
Where people slip
The posterior pituitary produces no hormones of its own — it is release and storage tissue only.
