The idea
A lipid-soluble hormone bound to its intracellular receptor acts as a transcription regulator, increasing or decreasing synthesis of specific mRNA molecules and, in turn, specific proteins.
In practice
A steroid hormone-receptor complex binds a hormone response element on DNA, triggering transcription of a target gene.
