The idea
Every land plant alternates between a multicellular haploid gametophyte and diploid sporophyte generation — the haplodiplontic cycle locked per Bio 1001, also called alternation of generations.
In practice
A liverwort's flattened thallus is its gametophyte; the stalked capsule growing from it is a separate sporophyte generation.
Where people slip
A plant's two generations are not one organism twice — they are separate bodies with different chromosome numbers.
