The idea
In a haplodiplontic life cycle, an organism alternates between a multicellular diploid sporophyte and a haploid gametophyte, meiosis and mitosis each producing one generation.
In practice
A plant's diploid sporophyte produces haploid spores by meiosis, and those spores grow by mitosis into a haploid gametophyte.
