The idea
Nucleotide excision repair removes a damaged DNA stretch, such as one from ultraviolet light, and resynthesizes it from the intact complementary strand.
In practice
UV damage that distorts the helix is cut out on both sides, and DNA polymerase and ligase fill and seal the gap.
