The idea
Mendel's law of segregation holds that an organism's two alleles at a locus separate during gamete formation, so each gamete carries exactly one.
In practice
A Yy plant produces Y-carrying and y-carrying pollen and egg cells, never a gamete carrying both.
Where people slip
Segregation separates the two alleles at one locus — it says nothing about how two different loci sort relative to each other.
