Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 7   AIL 0611 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Personification, as the Anchor Defines It

Captions available

The idea

The glossary defines personification as a form of metaphor comparing something non-human with something human. The test is whether a human capacity is attributed: feeling, intention, speech, or judgment. Movement alone is not enough, since non-human things move without being personified.

In practice

A human capacity, attributed.

Where people slip

Motion alone does not personify.
